Downtown of Old Capital Safe for Shoppers

Chester Williams

While residents are finalizing their last minute shopping and preparations for Christmas, the sad reality is that it is also a time when there is an increase in the number of robberies and burglaries. The Eastern Division South command has been on the beat, stopping criminals in their tracks. Since the start of the month, there has been an increase in patrols in the downtown area as shoppers carry along their merry way. Today we got an update with the police on how its anticrime plan for the season is going.

“…We have stepped up our presence in the commercial area because we are aware of the fact that some people are already in the Christmas mode, shopping. And so we want to be able to make those persons safe as they do their shopping. So as a result of that, we have increased our presence in the commercial area; that is Albert Street, Regent Street, Orange Street, Bishop Street and King Street area. So you will see more of that as of tomorrow leading up to the night time when stores close at nine. So you will see more police presence in the different commercial zones as well as the gang ridden areas.”

Sr. Supt. Alden Dawson, Deputy Regional Commander, Eastern Division South

“We do put out extra patrols in the evenings, during the shopping time and we will continue this right through the holidays and on the twenty-fourth, we will double that initiative that we presently have out there.”
