Hungarian embezzler sent home by Special Branch

According to San Pedro Police, sixty-two-year-old Maria Nagy Sandorne Dobria, also known as Maricska, was handed over to Hungarian police by Special Branch Division of the Belize Police Department on December seventh, after months of investigation in conjunction with their Hungarian counterparts and Interpol. She now faces millions of dollars in fines in connection with a failed multi-million dollar pyramid scheme costing over a thousand investors as much as sixty-six million U.S. dollars, twice as much as was raised in the scheme. Officer in charge, Assistant Superintendent Henry Jemmoth told News Five this afternoon that Dobria, who was supposedly on vacation on Ambergris Caye, had no criminal charges here and entered the country legally. However, she was confirmed to be on Interpol’s wanted list. Hungarian authorities had been looking for Dobria since April of 2015, on charges that an investment scheme she concocted on the sidelines of her travel agency enterprise Kun-Mediator, had not been approved by the Eastern European country’s Central Bank and was considered criminal embezzlement. Special Branch teams from San Pedro and Belmopan picked up Dobria at her hotel and brought her to Belmopan for the handover. She was sent home on a Lufthansa flight. Interestingly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs claims no knowledge of events although Hungarian media say that because the two countries do not have an extradition treaty, a special agreement was needed to oversee the handover. The Hungarian investigation is expected to continue into 2017.
