N.C.L. Will Feed Local Tourism in Mid-South and Toledo

Colin Murphy

Since NCL launched its Harvest Caye destination on November seventeenth, there have been concerns among local tour operators that their counterparts in Placencia aren’t getting a slice of the tourism pie.  According to Colin Murphy, Senior Vice President of Destination Development for NCL, a number of shore excursions are presently being offered to guests which help to generate revenue at locations such as Nim Li Punit.

“So we started with a tour operator that has experience with handling cruise guests because that’s important because it’s very different.  The mechanics of cruise tours versus tours for land-based passengers are very different.  So we take people to Nim Li Punit, for example, and my understanding is that by the end of the year they would have had more guests from us than they’ve had all year which is good for them because obviously it generates revenue and it creates more jobs.  We have river rafting and river tubing and we go to the spice farm.  So we started off with a fairly small compliment of tours on the understanding and the expectation that that will grow.  I mean you must remember that for us shore excursions are important for us, not only because we want to get people out into the community and to spread the economic benefit but also it’s a profitable business for us.  So getting people off on tours is important for us.”

We’ll have the full story on Harvest Caye in Friday’s newscast.
