P.U.P. Decries Reasons for A.G. Departure, Cabinet Reshuffle

The Opposition People’s United Party has accused the government of completely losing control of the Ministry of Natural Resources, and calls for an immediate independent audit of the powerful Ministry. In a press release the P.U.P. describes the explanation of Minister Vanessa Retreage’s departure “bizarre”, considering that she was only given that portfolio four months ago. This was after becoming Attorney General following the November 2015 elections. And, her year-long commitment was not mentioned at that time, a decision that the P.U.P. says is “ludicrous and deceitful” on the part of the Minister and her Prime Minister. With three ministers in charge in thirteen months, the P.U.P. insists that nothing is well in the Ministry, despite the Prime Minister’s declarations to the contrary. On the many land scandals involving ex-Minister Gaspar Vega’s family, the party says Belizeans have begun to question whether the Prime Minister turned a blind eye to proceedings until he could ignore it no longer, or whether he was asleep at the wheel and only removed him after two terms, when the extent of the mismanagement of government assets and loss of income became clear. Either way, the P.U.P. concludes, Belizeans are demanding real answers and not deflections, distractions and optical illusions from their national leader.
