Busting “Dynamite” Against the Law; Sellers Beware

One of the more unwelcome Christmas-time “traditions,” at least here in Belize City, is the letting off what is colloquially known as “popshot” or “dynamite” – not to be confused with the much more dangerous commercial explosive. However, these too are explosive devices, and thus governed by the Dangerous Goods Act which prohibits their possession or usage without a permit. Most times, it is little kids who purchase these explosives and set them off for fun. And while police will not crack down too heavily on them, there will be no reprieve for those selling the devices illegally, because of the unforeseen health hazards to older residents. We asked Assistant Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, who heads Eastern Division South, for details.

Chester Williams

ACP Chester Williams, Regional Commander, Eastern Division South

“The common man you will see on the streets bursting dynamite – it is against the law. But for the most part, when we do encounter it, there are children who are doing it. I certainly would not want my officers to be targeting children and making criminals of them; so we will not be pursuing the kids who are doing it – we will pursue those who are selling it. And once we come across any store or any individual who is engaging in the sale of these explosive devices without permit, or permission, we will prosecute them under the Act, because it is prohibited.”

According to Williams, some police officers use their discretion, but warnings will be issued in most circumstances to any persons caught with popshot or dynamite for causing a public nuisance. And for those wanting legal fireworks, a permit must be obtained for that too – and the parameters of their usage will be clearly set, so that silent zones like the area around Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital will not be affected.
