Belize City Chopping Victim Recovers as Stepson is Jailed for Christmas

Denzel Flowers

Police have arrested and charged nineteen year old Denzel Flowers with the attempted murder by chopping of his fifty-two year old step-mother, Eulalia Pop, also known as Consuelo Lopez. Flowers is also charged with dangerous harm and use of deadly means of harm. On Thursday at their residence on Louise Bevans Street, Flowers is accused of chopping Pop in her hand and head with a machete. While Pop is in recovery at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, Police continue their investigations and await a statement from her. We spoke to Pop’s daughter Gloria Flores about her mother’s recovery and to Assistant Commissioner of Police Chester Williams about the police’s investigation.

“The investigation is still ongoing, and there are certain things that the Police is trying to confirm; and as soon as that is done, then we will see where go from there. But we are happy to know that she is on the road to recovery, and when she is out of the hospital, we will be able to get more from her as to what actually took place.”

Gloria Flores, Daughter of Chopping Victim

“She’s doing a lot better; she is talking, she is eating soft food and stuff. She is fighting really hard and I spoke with her this morning and she is doing great; thank God for that. The doctors, they are taking her into another surgery tomorrow hopefully because her left hand was badly cut. So that is what they are doing and she will be placed in Medical Ward after tomorrow due to the fact that there is no more that the ICU can do because she is getting along very well.”

“I know that your step brother was charged and arraigned today before the courts.  Anything you have to say on that given that it was just something unimaginable that another family member would have done something like this.”

Gloria Flores

“Well I am just leaving it into the hands of the police so that they can do their job. I wasn’t happy with the response, but I thank them still for getting there and assisting like they did. I was angry for the fact that the police officer said he had his reason why he didn’t shoot the guy. I am not saying that he should have shot the guy meaning killing him, but at least a warning shot could have been much help. I just hope that justice is served and I am looking forward to my mom’s recovery.”

Denzel Flowers, a welder by trade, was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann-Marie Smith today and remanded without bail until February eleventh, 2017.
