Family Claims It Was an Accident; Police Wait for Post-Mortem Results

Howell Gillett

Late-breaking information from an aunt of the deceased, who spoke to News Five via telephone this evening, is that according to Janeeka’s father, they were sleeping in bed together when the child got up and went outside to play. She apparently fell down a steep flight of stairs, sustaining massive scrapes and bruises, and it was a while later before the father got up and found his child crying and injured. The father ran through the village with Janeeka, seeking help, before ultimately hitching a ride to Belmopan, though help was too late. According to the aunt, the parents have never beaten their child and any allegations to the contrary are false. We were unable to reach Belmopan police for confirmation, but we understand that the father has spoken to them, and the aunt confirmed that the mother has been released from custody as of news time. Earlier, Senior Superintendent Gillett told reporters that “conflicting” stories are keeping police from making a sure determination of what happened to little Janeeka.

Sr. Supt. Howell Gillett, Officer Commanding Belmopan Police

“It’s conflicting because people are saying one thing and the parent we have in custody is saying another thing. But we won’t leave it like that; we will get to – as a matter of fact as we speak, we have officers out in the field; they are out canvassing the neighbourhood to see if neighbors might have seen or heard something that occurred – not only last evening, but over a period of time.”

“So when you make reference to a period of time – is this family known to police, or were there any previous indications that abuse may have been involved?”

Sr. Supt. Howell Gillett

“Well, the father in question is known to the police; but that doesn’t – we cannot form a nexus between his notoriety and the incident took place. But of course we are looking for the father to come into custody, so that we could properly interview him, and get a better idea of what might have transpired, that caused or led to the death of this young child.”

A post-mortem examination of the body of Janeeka Campbell will be conducted on Thursday.
