Sick P.M. to Miss House on Friday; Faber Steps Into Top Job

Dean Barrow

Prime Minister Dean Barrow did not make it back to Belize from New York for health reasons, following meetings with bondholders.  A release today says the PM is receiving medical treatment for gastroenteritis. PM Barrow was experiencing symptoms seemingly consistent with viral gastroenteritis prior to his departure to New York.  The release states “the symptoms have persisted during his travel and he saw a doctor and was advised to run tests, some of which could not have been diagnosed in Belize.  For this reason, PM’s return is delayed until Sunday, eleventh December 2016.” There are two major events, however, that will proceed; the house meeting this Friday, which is also the day, when the United Nations Convention against Corruption, UNCAC is to be signed.  The PM’s absence has presented a rare situation as it relates to House matters; a first from what we have gathered.

Patrick Faber

That is because Minister Patrick Faber will get his first go as the leader on the Government Side in Friday’s house sitting as acting prime minister and will be doing most of the introducing bills and motions. The Order Papers do not look overly heavy. House business will most likely start with the suspension of Cayo South rep, Julius Espat.  Espat has been uninvited at the proceedings at least for Friday now that the court has ruled that it will not interfere in parliamentary business, meaning Espat’s purported suspension stands. The penning of the UNCAC is also expected to proceed with Faber appending his signature to it. On a positive one, however, the house meeting prior to the Christmas presents the opportunity for both sides to exchange Christmas greetings so the spirit inside the house, is usually one of good cheer; that is unless the Opposition seizes on the opportunity to score some points absent the strongest debater on the Government Side.

With all the fraud, theft and murder in Belize, it’s no wonder Barrow is ill! I wouldn’t have his job for love nor money!
