Maybe Some Cheer for Christmas This Year; Gov’t Reps Will Be Resourceful

Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington

The Christmas Cheer was introduced by the Barrow Administration to U.D.P. ministers, caretakers and other political officers.  Thousands of dollars from the public purse were also disbursed, albeit disproportionately to opposition parliamentarians, as a Christmas Cheer. The monies are said to have been drawn down from the bountiful Petrocaribe Funds. But Petrocaribe has dried up and times of austerity are upon us.  So will there be Christmas Cheer this year for those hams and turkeys to constituents?  There may be, but the funding will not come from government’s coffers. DPM Patrick Faber confirmed this on Tuesday, and when we caught up with Minister Wilfred Elrington, he says he will be crafty.

Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington, Area Rep., Pickstock

“I think it will be premature for me to make that pronouncement. I need a few more days to find out…Christmas is very special for people and people look forward to it so that, I think where there is a will, there is a way. And I certainly have the will, so I would not count that out. I think we will in fact come up with something for our people in Pickstock. I am told actually that in Mesopotamia they have been able to find resources. I don’t know about other areas, but I am told that. I spoke to the minister himself and he is quite resourceful. I’ve got to try to match him, so I am sure the people in Pickstock will have some cheer.”

“But those monies won’t be – because I know it was the Prime Minister that gifted – from government coffers?”

Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington

“Well I have always tried to rely as little as possible on government coffers because I know things have always been difficult. So it doesn’t mean that you can only source government; there are other sources of resources that we are going to hopefully tap into to provide some assistance for those who really need it.”
