4 Murders on the Weekend; Dale Tillett Ambushed Near Downtown

Dale Tillett

A Belize City man was murdered in the wee hours of Friday morning, giving way to the start of a bloody weekend in which police tonight have four murders to investigate. The well-known tour-guide, forty-four year old Dale Anthony Tillett was executed as he walked on Hydes Lane along with friends, one who was injured in the shooting.  A duo drove up on motorcycle and let loose a hail of bullets on the group; killing Tillett Senior instantly. Tonight, his grieving mother, who’s also lost her grandson to gun violence, recounts the last conversation she shared with her son. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

Geraldine Tillett, Mother of Murder Victim

“I have to be there for my family….it’s hard and no one knows what I got through at night, especially knowing that on the Friday, he was lying on my bed and we had a long conversation about his relationship issues he was having with his girlfriend. One of the few because sometimes we are at odds because I am the type fop parent that I don’t encourage certain things in my house and I was giving him some advice on how to deal with women. I thank God for that because at least I had a chance to speak to him gain just before he left to go to the Spoken Word.”

…one final conversation with her eldest son before he was shot in the head and killed in the Old Capital, says Geraldine Tillett. The family of Dale Tillett is tonight once again mourning the death of one of their own following a shooting on Saturday morning on the north side of Belize City. Forty-four year old Tillett, affectionately known as “Blindz,” was executed on Hyde’s Lane as he reportedly headed to get something to eat. He never made it to his Regent Street West, because he was executed several blocks away.

“I was shocked because I knew he had left…he had said that he was going to the Spoken Word Poetry at Spoonaz. So when she called me I was shock and I called my other daughter and she says she knows because it was here that the police called. And so she called my next daughter because she didn’t want me to be out there. My cousin came by and said that he also got grazed and another young man was shot in the shoulder and that’s when I knew that it was three of them together. Later on in the morning, because I wanted to find out exactly what took place, so I had sent for my cousin to find out what took place and he said that it was actually him that the gunman was after, but because the gunman missed him, he shot my son.”

The well-known tour guide of Madam Liz Avenue off Faber’s Road Extension, was heading toward downtown when he came under fire by one of two men who rode up from behind on a motorcycle. Twenty-eight-year-old David Garcia, who was walking along with him at the time, was also injured to the left shoulder, while another escaped unhurt.

Supt. Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B.

“Just about forty or fifty feet from the corner where the motionless body of Dale Anthony Tillett was seen lying face up with apparent gunshot wound to the back of his head. What police gathered so far is that Dale Tillett was walking down Hyde’s Lane towards North Front Street along with two other male persons when two persons on motorcycle came from Hyde’s Lane towards North Front Street and as they approached them almost by the corner, one of the male persons on the motorcycle fired several shots at the persons walking along with Dale Tillett. As a result, Dale Tillett received the fatal injuries and the other person, David Garcia, received an apparent gunshot wound to the left side of the shoulder. At present, Garcia is in a stable condition at the K.H.M.H. at this time.”

It is not believed that Tillett Senior was the intended target and that he is the victim of a senseless murder.

“So far, we have not been able to establish a motive as we know that Mister Tillett was a tour guide and as far as we are concerned, he does not affiliate to any of the gangs in Belize City.”

Geraldine Tillett

“He was all over the city; not afraid of being anywhere because he lived all the way on Madam Liz Crescent and he wasn’t afraid to go anywhere.”

Dale’s son, who carries his namesake, was murdered following a shooting on December thirty-first five years ago outside the then popular nightclub, Palm Island in Belize City. The family is now trying to cope with the loss of a father and son.

Geraldine Tillett

“His son was shot on…around the same time on the thirty-first of December 2011 and he died on the fifth of January 2012; he was shot on the head.”

“Is there any indication that perhaps the entire George Street element may somehow be involved somewhere in this because we know that when his son was killed, it was said that it had a George Street angle on that murder?”

Supt. Alejandro Cowo

“No, there is nothing so far to indicate to us that that murder that occurred five years ago has to do anything with this present one.”

According to Police five persons are currently detained in connection with this murder. Duane Moody for News Five.
