Godwin Wants Fellow Minister Castro to “Raise Cane”

Godwin Hulse

Minister Edmond Castro claims to have as much as two thousand acres of sugar cane under production in and around his native Maskall. But the Sugar Act mandates for now that B.S.I. can only accept cane from farmers in Corozal and Orange Walk, unless there is a shortage. Fellow Minister and sugar planter himself, Godwin Hulse, aims to change that, and today he differentiated between the legitimately owned cane fields and the parcel bought and administrated from Eloy Escalante.

Senator Godwin Hulse, Minister of Agriculture

“I don’t know what “known better” means; I’ve been asked the question over and over now, so let me state the facts as I know them. I understand from him he has a license; that’s what I understand from him – I haven’t checked the records. I also understand from him that he is registered as an administrator where Eloy Escalante is concerned. I don’t know what that administrator means at this point – so don’t cut and paste that out of the thing, I don’t know what that means at this point. But what I do know is that he has cane; that I know that for a fact, because his plantation is next to mine, in the Isabella [Bank] area – and I see his trucks hauling out, I see his sons driving them, I see him there on the weekend – and as a man who has cane and who has invested, he should be able to sell. Now, how come his name is on whatever list, I don’t know. And I won’t pretend to know – we will find out. But I don’t frown on the fact that he has cane and he needs to sell his cane. What I would frown on – the fact is his cane would have to be sold in somebody else’s name, and he has to pay that somebody else because there is no way he can get his cane in, and the somebody else name that is in don’t have no cane. Those are the kinds of mess – but let’s be real, man. He has cane; he should be able to sell his cane; as simple as that.”
