Chartered accountants confirm Net Vasquez is not one of their own

On the Phone: Reynaldo Magana

This evening, the Institute of Chartered Accountants convened its scheduled meeting and discussed the revelations surrounding the nomination of Net Vasquez to the Integrity Commission. I.C.A. had written to the Prime Minister on November eleventh announcing that accountant Warren Coye was their choice to sit on the commission. But six days later, Prime Minister Dean Barrow wrote back stating that because their nomination was late in coming, the Government would nominate a familiar friend, Nestor Vasquez, to take the role. The nomination came up in the senate on Wednesday, where the issue of conflict of interest arose since Vasquez sits on a number of government boards. This was followed by our story on Thursday in which we reported that Vasquez’s name does not appear in a list of practicing accountant. The appointment to the commission requires the nominee to be an active member of the I.C.A. This evening President of the Institute Reynaldo Magana confirmed in an interview before news time tonight, that Vasquez is no longer a member in good standing with the I.C.A. Institute.

“We were requested by the Chamber of Commerce to make a nomination to the Integrity Commission and we had stated that we would make a nomination in due time. And on the eleventh of November, we had sent a letter to the Prime Minister indicating our nomination, which was based on the list of current members that we had, and after consultation we had made a nomination of Mister Warren Coye. And then, thereafter on the seventeenth of November, we had received a response from the Prime Minister, who had indicated that they had already made a selection, because we had taken long to make a selection. So that is where it ended.”

“And in the case of Mister Vasquez?”

On the Phone: Reynaldo Magana

“In the case of Mister Vasquez, he had been a member in the past; he had held a practicing certificate, and I believe that he did not renew for some time, so he was not a member in good standing.”

Vasquez’s resume has him serving as the chair of Belize Telemedia Limited’s board; the Investment Committee of the Social Security Board; and a director on the Board of Alba.
