Remembering the great Andy Palacio on 56th birthday

Today would have been his fifty-sixth birthday, but although he has passed his legend lives on. Andy Palacio was not only an ambassador for the Garifuna culture, but also Belize. The musical icon is celebrated around the world and especially here in Garifuna communities. On what would have been his fifty-sixth birthday, his name sake tribute committee organized a number of masses and memorials in his honor in Dangriga, Seine Bight, Barranco, Hopkins and even Belmopan earlier today. Around six-thirty this evening a mass at St Martin’s Church is being held in his honor. We spoke with one of the organizers who says that it is important to remember Andy Palacio and to continue his work for and among the Garinagu people.

“For us, it is very important that we do not forget who Andy is and what he did for Belize. Because what he did in extension not only for Garinagu but for Belize. He put Belize on the map. For a lot of people who didn’t know, he represented us at several concerts, festivals; in particular, after the Watina album came out, he filled stadiums all over the world. One of the number one things that he did was that he spoke about Belize. And, of course, he also impressed upon us not to lose what our forefathers gave to us Garinagu. It is our firm belief that not only do we not want to forget him but we also want to continue his work and from our part here in Belize City and in Belize in general, we want to continue the work he had started so that the song that he wrote, where he asked, ‘who will bake the cassava bread with me in the future? Who will sing Arumahani songs with me with in the future?’ that we will have that because he impressed upon us not to lose it because our forefathers went through so much, so we should not lose it now. Come next year, we want to start working on a language retrieval program where we will start to teach Garifuna. I am pretty excited about it. These are the things that we need to continue. Where the food and the dress is concerned, and the music it is not so much of a challenge. But when it comes to the language it is a real challenge and that is what we want to change.”
