Petty Officer Daniel Arzu Returns to Belize on Monday

Daniel Arzu Jr.

Petty Officer Daniel Arzu Junior of the Belize National Coast Guard was shot towards the end of October. He was shot in the head when he was visiting his child’s mother at an apartment on Neal Penn Road. Arzu Junior had to be placed in an induced coma and his prognosis wasn’t very good. However, through the support of the Mexican Navy, Arzu Junior was airlifted for treatment at the Mexican National Naval Hospital in Mexico City. He has since been recovering over in Mexico and is scheduled to return to Belize and will resume work. Commander Borland gave us an update on Arzu Junior.

“He is doing very, very well. You heard me offer my acknowledgement to our Mexican navy counterparts this morning; they have been stellar in their support to us. There is no way we can pay them; we owe them a debt of gratitude for what they have been doing.  Petty officer Arzu is scheduled to be returning to country on Monday and we would like to make it a media event because the air ambulance from the Mexican Navy is flying him back into country. He’s made tremendous recovery. At this point, I believe that he will recover well enough to return to work.”

“Have you spoken with him over the phone? How does he feel about the support that he’s been getting from the coastguard and the Mexicans?”

John Borland

“I’ve spoke with him; I’ve spoken with his family and they are extremely grateful—not only to the coastguard, but to our Mexican counterparts. You know his mom is over there with him; his dad has visited on more than one occasion and they have taken real good care of them. So they are really grateful for the level of support that they have gotten from us and of course through our partnership with our Mexican counterparts. He is in great spirits; he looks forward to returning to Belize to continue his recovery and rehabilitation process and to return back to work as a member of the coastguard.”
