Wil Maheia Urges Internationalization of Guatemalan Claim

The Territorial Volunteers are also calling for the further internationalization of the unfounded Guatemalan claim on Belize. Many have complained that Belize cannot count on the support it had at the time of Independence from the majority of world leaders and organizations because we have failed to keep up appearances on the world stage and allowed Guatemala free rein to peddle lies and untruths about the current situation. That can be remedied, according to B.T.V.’s Wil Maheia, by appealing to the United Nations Security Council.

“Every member state of the U.N., you know, they have members of the Security Council, who should look out for the peaceful existence of a country’s people. We are not in a situation right now where we are living peacefully with the Guatemalans because of the Guatemalan military; so we are demanding that our Government take it to the U.N. so that the U.N. could try and settle this matter.”

After five years of resolutions, in 1980 the United Nations paved the way for Belize’s Independence by declaring that it should become independent by the end of the next General Session in 1981. After a last failed attempt at ending the claim with the Heads of Agreement, Belize became independent on September twenty-first and joined the organization four days later.
