U.S. Ambassador Carlos Moreno’s Term Drawing to Close

Carlos Moreno

The election of a new United States president now means that Ambassador Carlos Moreno’s term of office in Belize is winding down.  President Barack Obama officially demits office on January twentieth, 2017 when President-elect Donald Trump is officially inaugurated.  It is expected that Ambassador Moreno’s tour will come to an end sometime thereafter since he is a presidential appointee.  We asked Moreno on Tuesday night if he has begun looking back at his brief stay in the Jewel.

Carlos Moreno, U.S. Ambassador to Belize

“I’m a presidential appointee, appointed by Barack Obama whose terms ends on January twentieth, 2017.  So I will be leaving sometime after that date, I don’t have a specific date yet but the new president, whoever that might be will formulate or gather together a committee to vet candidates for appointments as ambassadors really throughout the world.  Belize has been very fortunate to have, I think, and my predecessors are very good ambassadors.  I’m sure whoever the next president is will appoint someone equally qualified.”

Isani Cayetano

“Now if you were to look back at your brief stay here in Belize, have you thought about some of your fondest moments either in terms of exploring the country or some of the contributions, the meaningful contributions that you’ve made towards the development of Belize?”

Carlos Moreno

“Yes, I have been, you know, very fortunate to have traveled really the length and the breadth of Belize.  It’s a beautiful country.  I know that that phrase has almost become a cliché here but I firmly believe that whether you are talking about Mountain Pine Ridge or the cayes or the Mayan sites.  One of my favorites has always been Crooked Tree in the early morning dawn when all the birds are out.  It’s just a really magical place.  Secondly, I think the people of Belize are very warm and welcoming.  It’s a microcosm of really the world.”

Another departing ambassador is Benjamin Ho. The Taiwanese diplomat concludes his tour in Belize and departs for Taipei over the weekend. His successor, Charles Keh-yue Liu, arrives next week Monday.

Nice guy. Should stay out of politics. Especially with this President.
