Accused underwear thieves plead guilty; blame it on the alcohol

Johny Netty Lopez

In December of 2015, a woman from Palmar Orange Walk and another from Ranchito, Corozal District were accused by a Belize City businesswoman of shoplifting underwear from her store. This morning, Donaela Bernaldita Smith and Johny Netty Lopez, had a change of heart when they appeared in court. They changed their not-guilty plea to guilty and threw themselves at the mercy of the court asking for leniency since they both have children to care for. Smith told Senior Magistrate that they were drunk at the time of the incident. The women were caught on a surveillance camera stealing underwear from Siloe Store located at the corner of Orange and George Streets. Store owner Ingrid Perez made the report to the police after which police detained both women at a bus terminal. In court, Smith, the mother of eight children, broke down saying she is ashamed of what she did and would never do that again. Lopez also begged for mercy as she is a mother of three children. Senior Magistrate, Sharon Frazer noted that both women had no previous convictions and fined them one thousand dollars each or in default one year imprisonment.
