Public Health Department Cracks Down on Rodent Infested Belmopan Restaurant

The Ministry of Health has responded to concerns raised on social media about Chen’s Restaurant, an establishment in the Water Reservoir Area of Belmopan. Patrons and residents of the area had complained about unsanitary conditions, rodent infestation and waste water disposal a few weeks ago, and after an investigation by the Belmopan section of the Public Health Department and the Belmopan City Council in October, the restaurant was ordered to be shut down while it was cleaned and sanitized. It has since been re-opened but another complaint posted recently on social media about the same restaurant is, according to Senior Public Health Inspector in the Ministry John Bodden, a late posting and not a new situation following the intervention. According to Bodden the original complaint was about waste water treatment from the restaurant and the investigation uncovered the other problems. In conjunction with the Belmopan City Hall, residents and businesses in the area were invited to a meeting today for an update on the plans to install a rodent control plan. Bodden assured us that the restaurant is safe to eat at and that the Ministry continues to monitor the restaurant’s activities. The press release states that the Public Health laws are also being reviewed to including stronger penalties for those not in compliance. The Ministry of Health takes this opportunity to encourage the public to officially report any public issues of concern to the Public Health Department in your district so they can take the necessary action and protect the public.
