Belize City Police Mediate with Rival Gangs

Chester Williams

In recent weeks, there has been a spate of shootings and murders across the city. It is believed that these have resulted from turf wars on the south side, namely the Antelope Street, South and North Creek Areas. These turf wars are because well-known criminal elements want to control specific areas to sell their drugs. Well, ACP Chester Williams told us today that they were in mediation with some of the different warring groups. The hope is that it will help to slow down the shootings. While the groups have given commitments to the Police to ease up the rivalry, ACP Chester Williams says that they will still have high police presence in these hotspots.

ACP Chester Williams, Regional Commander, Eastern Division South

“Myself and Miss Finnegan, we were engaged in a mediation today and the mediation had to do with the spate of shootings we have been having in the Antelope Street, South Creek, North Creek Area. And, again, yes, we met with the different groups with a view to assist them to come to some amical solution to the problem. Both sides made commitments that they will do their best to ensure that the shooting stop. But notwithstanding that, I will say that out Police presence in the area will continue and if you go there night or day time you will see that the Police presence has increased significantly because we want the residents of that area to feel safe in their different homes. The only way we can do that is to ensure that we put the relevant patrols in place and we do the relevant operations. This morning we went in the area and we brought in elements from the SPU and elements from MIT, along with our Strike Team and we did operations in the area which was geared at targeting those individuals who we believe are involved; as well as to conduct searches for firearm and drugs in the area because we have come to understand that the reason behind the shooting is a war over turf to sell firearm, drugs, so we want to see how we can assist in trying to eliminate that issue.”
