OSH Bill Will Be Addressed Through N.T.U.C.B.

Dean Barrow

The Occupational Safety and Health Bill is among a few demands that the trade unions, including the B.N.T.U., have with the business community.  It is the final point on a list of demands put together by teachers.  That item was removed from the agenda during Thursday’s discussion as it was agreed that B.N.T.U. will address the piece of legislation through the National Trade Union Congress of Belize, together with the Chamber of Commerce.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“Item eight, which is passage and implementation of the OSH Bill, the B.N.T.U. withdrew that in terms of what they had been demanding, which is passage and implementation and said they will handle it via the N.T.U.C.B. with the business community.  So, that is where things stand.  I repeat that what I have done is to set out for you government’s position insofar as I was able to indicate the immediate response from the B.N.T.U. to the various items but making clear that overall there has been no acceptance or rejection of the deal by the B.N.T.U.   They have gone to caucus and to consult with their people.  We believe that we will hear something from them in the course of tomorrow.”

While the P.M. had that to say, today, the OSH Bill was supported in full by Minister of Housing Michael Finnegan.
