P.M. to Finally Sign Order for 13th Senator; Makes Moves on Integrity Commission

Dean Barrow

In respect of the Integrity Commission, PM said he waiting for a list of persons to be presented by the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry. But as it relates to the thirteenth senator; after stalling on this for years, the he announced he would move on it. But still, there needs to be work done after the thirteenth senator will head to Belmopan. The PM also dealt with the remaining demands.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“The Chamber of Commerce has been in touch with the Institute of Chartered Accounts. Remember the hold up with this is our inability to find a chartered accountant willing to serve. It is our understanding that the Institute is prepared to give me a list of five names of chartered accountants who would be prepared to serve. We are not quite sure, based on what is reported to us as having been said by the Chamber President this morning, whether they sent the names to him and he forwards it to me or whether I am to write directly to the Institute asking for the list of names, but either way we will get that done. And once we have those names, then we will go through the processes required by law for the appointment of the integrity commission.  Appointment of the thirteenth senator…I will sign the commencement order, bringing that into force by next Thursday. But, while the instrument fixing a date for it to come into force will be done not later than next Thursday, it won’t come into force for three months. And the reason for this is that the constitutional provision providing for the appointment of the thirteenth senator is extremely open ended.”

The Prime Minister also announced that there was agreement in respect of the OSH and discussions continue on this. We’ll have more coming up in the newscast.
