Police Minister wants to bring community and department together

Godwin Hulse

Senator Godwin Hulse has been adjusting to his responsibilities as Minister of Police since being assigned the additional portfolio during the last Cabinet reshuffle.  The process has been shaping out rather quickly and today Minister Hulse was the keynote speaker at the passing out ceremony of a new cohort of officers.  But what’s in store for the Belize Police Department under his stewardship?  That’s what we asked him earlier today.

Godwin Hulse, Minister of Police

“It’s been coming along excellent, as I said in my speech there that we are focusing on how we can, the goal is to reduce crime and keep citizens safe and so there has to be both psychological and practical mechanisms to do that.  I, in conjunction with the senior officers, have been discussing the issue of and the order of importance, improving intelligence.  So we have information of where and when something is about to happen, improving operations so we can prevent it if possible; prevention is better than cure.  But should it be unfortunate that the criminal or the wrongdoer escapes that then at least we can investigate properly so we can prepare a proper case through the prosecution branch so we can prepare a proper case through the prosecution branch to take to courts.  You know the police doesn’t dispense justice, hope they do  not; it is to get these cases to court so that the court may convict those who are intent of breaking the law and give them the just incarceration as the law determines.  That is the goal and we are working towards that.  Coupled with that as well is community policing because I am of the view that, you know, nothing is solved by the bullet, nothing.  No part of the world, no war ever solves anything.  People sit down and talk that’s why you hear me say over and over we’ve got to talk.  The police and the community are on, the police come out of the community and we can’t have this divide.”
