Curiosity Kills “Sticks” – Now Charged with Belcan Bonfire

On Wednesday afternoon, six persons were hauled to the Belize City Magistrate Court – charged in connection with the burning of tires on BelCan Bridge on Monday afternoon. COLA President Geovannie Brackett, Perry “Sticks” Smith, and Clayburn Pascascio were jointly charged for “Cause a Bonfire to be Set.” It is alleged that they paid twenty-three year old Adrian Avaloy and two minors, ages sixteen and seventeen, to set the tires ablaze. Late Wednesday afternoon, Brackett et al were escorted to the court in shackles, chains and cuffs, and later paraded into the courtroom of Magistrate Carlon Mendoza. All six pleaded not guilty to the charges and were given bail, which was met. Following arraignment, a visibly annoyed Smith told the media that he was simply inquisitive and has now been charged for an offense he didn’t commit.

“Everybody know Sticks dah wah community activist. Any community, any organization weh di step up for Belize and Belizeans, Stix wah deh right there fi observe and watch weh di happen. I live on South Side Belize; I was at the B.N.T.U.’s meeting. I have to cross the BelCan Bridge fi go home; you know that. So if I di cross the bridge and I see tires there and I dah wah activist—of course I noh fool, I noh simple, I see something di happen—so I sit back and I witness weh di happen. So because I witness weh di happen; I used to be a reporter too. So nothing noh change. Noh because I noh work fi this ya news station noh more, I still dah me. So when I see things di happen, socially conscious issues, I stop and I take wah hole. I found it cool to photograph it just like everybody else found it cool to photograph it. I found it cool to be there and witness what was happening just like every other bystander found it cool to be there and witness what was happening. I want know how I could left from B.N.T.U.’s meeting on a bicyle and carry all of them tires on BelCan Bridge and light dehn tires deh? I want unu tell me that.”
