COLA’s Geovannie Brackett Sought in Belcan Fire Investigation; 5 Others Detained

On Monday afternoon, a tire fire erupted on BelCan Bridge in the city in the height of the rush hour, disrupting the flow of traffic. This morning at around four o’clock, tires were set on fire on the Hummingbird Highway. While there are images of the fire, police could not confirm the incident. The B.N.T.U. has disassociated itself from that type of incident. Police said today they have an idea who may be involved and have detained five persons and are looking for three more including a well-known activist for the Belize City incident. This afternoon we contacted COLA’s President, Geovannie Brackett, who accounted for his time and actions.

On the Phone: Geovannie Brackett, President, COLA

“You’re hearing the same thing that I heard; that I am wanted for questioning in relation to the matter. I heard that they have arrested four or five young men, who are not COLA members, and so they are looking to want to question me about what happened yesterday. I can only tell the police what everybody has seen on Facebook; that there were tires lit. I did not see who light them. I was at Krem and from Krem I went over to the teachers rally. And leaving there to drop a member home is when I saw the commotion and I responded as every other bystander and so I was only caught up in the mix and watching. That’s about it; I don’t know what else the police wants to know.”

Duane Moody

“Do you believe that their maybe thinking that you were involved in setting the tires ablaze?”

On the Phone: Geovannie Brackett

“Well I am not quite sure what they want; I can’t speculate at this moment. But I won’t go in without my attorney.”

Brackett sent a message by Whatsapp late this evening saying that he is innocent and will hand himself in to the police on Wednesday.
