Belize National Teachers’ Union confirms mass demonstration in Belmopan

It is now official: a massive demonstration of teachers will take place in Belmopan on Monday September nineteenth.  The convergence on Independence Hill comes just two days before Independence Day. In a prelude to that event, the Belize National Teachers’ Union has asked its membership to wear signature green T-shirts as part of the “Stand Up For Belize” solidarity campaign on matters of urgent national importance. This afternoon, following the Annual General Meeting of the Corozal Rural Branch of the union in Louisville, Corozal District, B.N.T.U. National President Luke Palacio and several of his branch presidents addressed the media. Palacio revealed that the demonstration is on for Monday, regardless of Prime Minister Barrow’s response to their list of seven demands issued last week.

“First of all there were no deadlines and no conditions set as it relates to the plan of action the BNTU has. A letter was sent to the PM asking and making certain demands and we gave him up until Friday to respond, and he has done so; he responded yesterday, that has been reported to our membership that has been reported vastly in the media. In relation to the demonstration we are having on Monday, it was not contingent on whether the Pm responded by Friday or not. Our position is that on the 19th of September we are going to have a national demonstration in Belmopan.”

Palacio says the B.N.T.U. does plan to join the Public Service Union and Association of Public Service Senior Managers in meeting with the Prime Minister on Friday, and will subsequently seek a separate meeting with regard to his response to their list of demands after consultation with the Council of Management.

It was time teachers stand for the good of our country. It is the only strong and credible union our country has and the one that truly practices the democratic process. When politicians are destroying our identity, it is time to unite with the teacher and fight the traitors of our country. We know they will do all in their hands to divide the union like what they did with the churches and even the PSU, but we think teachers will not bend to those corrupted politicians.

I support the teachers, even if my kids don’t get to have any classes on Monday. It is important to address the pressing matters, even if education has to suffer a day or a few days. Even weeks, if push come to shove.
