Senator Godwin Hulse hopes Government can reach compromise with unions

Godwin Hulse

Former Minister of Labor Godwin Hulse has also interjected on the present situation with teachers and the demand for the final tranche of their salary increase.  Ahead of a scheduled meeting with the prime minister on Friday, Hulse says that PM Barrow will do what is necessary to get members of the Joint Unions Negotiating Team to come to one accord.

Godwin Hulse, Former Minister of Labor

“There’s a joint negotiating team and we agreed to all the conditions.  The government proposed to that team that it would like to move forward if you like with that three percent payment because of the hurricane and the cost to the hurricane.  That is not a fiction, that’s a fact.  The APSSM and the PSU have agreed.  The BNTU apparently has not agreed.  I understand the prime minister will use his best efforts to meet with them to try to get them to agree but that is all I can say.  I trust they would have agree because it’s not as though they are going to lose it, it’s just that it is going to be paid a little later.  That is all, and I think that’s a reasonable request coming from the government.”

Isani Cayetano

“But on your end, how do you see this?  Is this the teachers being unreasonable based on the fact that of the three unions that for the Joint Unions Negotiating Team, two of them have agreed to a deferral for April of next year.  Is this the teachers being unreasonable?”

Godwin Hulse

“I will not say the teachers because I do not know that the union executive is speaking for all the teachers.  There are what, five, six thousand teachers.  I would have to see what is out there and I don’t even know if the teachers understand this in depth.  We deh da Belize you know and in Belize things are not always logically explained.  People get hyped over things that are said and they react emotionally but when people get a proper understanding.  One thing about us Belizeans, you know, we become very sober and we understand and we back down.  So give the process a chance.”

Well Mr Hulse the one that doesn’t understand is you. All branch meetings of the BNTU country wide had a vote in a democratic way and they send a resounding voice on the decision taken by the executive. The branch in my area only two teachers voted against.
