B.N.T.U. wrong to consider industrial action, says Hulse

Godwin Hulse

As for a call for industrial action, Hulse, like Minister of Education Patrick Faber, admits that there really is not a labor dispute that would warrant teachers taking to the streets in the days ahead.

Godwin Hulse, Former Minister of Labor

“The fact of the matter is that industrial action is the end process after you’ve negotiated, negotiations have broken down et cetera, then you say well okay I will give notice and then I will take action because I have to force you.  We haven’t even gone there.  We’ve been talking and it hasn’t broken down, as part of the agreement two of the unions, and remember they were joint negotiating, two of them have said we’re good with this man.  So clearly there’s a disagreement among the unions, but not with the unions and government as far as I am concerned.  So yes I will agree with you that we should not even be considering industrial action in this matter.”

“But considering that’s what they are doing, what goes into effect here, because if they are taking undue industrial action then what’s the blowback that we are looking at?”

Godwin Hulse

“Well I would hope that they don’t, let me just say that, because this is going to affect the lives of thousands of people.  It is going to affect students who have just gone back to school, I mean the education of our children is paramount man and we can’t get the issues mixed up.  Let’s be crystal clear, it is not as though they are fighting for salary increase, that has been agreed, it’s a deferral and it’s a reasonable deferral based on natural events that occurred.  So if we understand that then we should not have any dispute.  I won’t comment anymore because I don’t know how it’s going to flesh out.  The prime minister is going to speak to the unions, I understand, sometime on Friday.  Let us wait and see what happens.”

Oh please, Godwin! Like UDP didn’t used to protest at the drop of a hat when the Musa government was in power. You guys would incite a protest every time you turned around.
