P.M. Barrow Insists Senator Mark Lizarraga Will Not Chair Senate Inquiry Committee

Mark Lizarraga

In his press conference on September first, PM Barrow also went on record to dismiss the notion of the business senator as the chair for an investigation into the immigration scandal during the period 2011 and 2013.  While the Cabinet will revisit on Tuesday the issue and the P.M. has said he would now not be adverse to senate select investigation, his position on Senator Mark Lizarraga remains firm.  When asked on Friday if he cared to explain why he does not support Lizarraga as chairman, PM Barrow declined to elaborate.  What we do know is that the senator has been outspoken about economic decisions that government has made.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“When we got to this question of who should chair whichever committee, I had made it plain that while I was sticking out or holding out for the bicameral committee, I had no problem with a social partner chairing that committee and I said, but not Mark Lizarraga.  That position has not changed.”

“Why though? Do you care to explain?”

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“No, I don’t care to explain… Because I may say some unkind things about the senator and I will not do that so I don’t care to explain.”
