Belize City man charged in murder of Nicasio Zuniga

Keron Usher

A Belize City youth was gunned down in the city on Monday night minutes before the live news broadcast. Today, three days after his execution style murder, Belize City police have levied a single charge of murder against twenty-year old Keon Usher, a resident of a Chancellor Street, Belize City. Usher was duly arraigned before the Senior Magistrate, Sharon Fraser for the murder of twenty-two year old Nicasio John Zuniga. Zuniga was shot to the check and the bullet exited his head. He was ambushed by one of two men who approached him on bicycle. Today, Usher was denied bail and remanded to the Belize Central Prison until January seventeenth. Police suspect the murder is gang related but the Zuniga family says not so.

ACP Chester Williams, Regional Commander, Eastern Division South

ACP Chester Williams

“In relation to the shooting death of Mister Nicasio Zuniga, yesterday we formally arrested and charged Keon Usher for the crime of Murder.”

“Sir explain what forces are at play in terms of what was Keron Usher’s motive to kill Mister Zuniga who was just returning from the shop?”

ACP Chester Williams

“Like I have said before in previous interviews that we believe that the shooting was gang related. While Mister Zuniga may not have been one of those persons who were actively out there involved in gang activities, he does associates himself with persons who are involved in gang activities and I believe that he was targeted because of those persons he associated himself with. I would not go as far as saying that they are being targeted because of their neighbourhood, but the second one which is that of the associate, that may be the case yes. But I have also said time and time again that the St. Martin’s De Porres area, particularly the Lacroix Boulevard and McKay Boulevard and that Complex Road area, is very challenging to Belize. And it is challenging because of the different elements that live within the area. You find that there are instances where they are living in each other’s turf and often times they are lurking.”
