PUP Party Leader says The Barrow administration is beleaguered by a number of successive scandals

John Briceno

One last thing from the Leader of the Opposition…The Barrow administration is beleaguered by a number of successive scandals, the latest being the findings of the Auditor General’s special report on the Immigration Department.  The fact that the U.D.P. government is presently overwhelmed by allegations of corruption harkens back to a point in time when the P.U.P. was similarly under fire in 2005.  That defining moment proved critical for the U.D.P. who seized the opportunity to win the favor of the people going into the 2008 general elections.  Today, we asked Briceño if his party will seek to take advantage of the existing opportunity.

Isani Cayetano

“There’s a sentiment, a public opinion, if I may, that what is currently taking place with the United Democratic Party government and the fact that there seems to be one issue after the next is sort of reminiscent of 2005 when the PUP went through its own situation.  What do you guys now do to try to capitalize on this specific watershed moment?”

John Briceño, P.U.P. Leader

“Well it’s not a matter of capitalizing, it’s a matter of doing the right thing.  The prime minister promised this nation that he was not going to tolerate not a single whiff of corruption.  We’ve had scandals at the Karl Heusner [Memorial Hospital] with the medicine, scandals with the thirteen babies.  We had problems with Mr. Castro with visas.  We had problems with Mr. Castro with funeral expenses and taking money.  We had problems with the Commissioner of Police that was told to hand over the file on Mr. Penner and now we have the biggest scandal ever where no other than the Auditor General has taken out a report that is saying that at least thirteen former and present UDP ministers are implicated and the government is doing nothing.  They have to answer.  They have to answer.  We can’t allow the prime minister to spin and come in using fancy words and trying to come up with different ideas just to move the attention of the people from the real problems of this country.  We have a very, very corrupt government and it has to stop and it needs to stop now.”
