P.M. Meets With Churches; Another Meeting Planned for Friday

Dean Barrow

Section Fifty-three…will it be appealed by the churches?  It’s a position that is yet to be formalized following a meeting today with Prime Minister Barrow. This afternoon, representatives of the Belize Council of Churches and the National Evangelical Association of Belize sat down with PM Barrow to discuss the section of the Criminal Code that has been amended by the Supreme Court.  That piece of law which decriminalizes any unnatural act between consenting adults in private has struck a cord with the religious community.  Not only is it vehemently opposed but there is also serious concern in respect of the interpretation of sex to include sexual orientation.  At the end of the lengthy discussion, PM Barrow was short in responding to our query, save to say that a follow-up meeting will be held on Friday morning.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“The substance of the discussion, we’ll meet again on Friday at the Biltmore at ten o’clock and thereafter we hope to have a final position to give to you and to the country.”

Phillip Wright

“Is it at this time the churches’ strong position that an appeal should be lodged or was there give and take?”

Bishop Phillip Wright, Vice President, Belize Council of Churches

“I would describe it more as give and take.  We still have to get our minds wrapped around exactly what we want to appeal and that’s where we are as a Christian body at the moment.  But people were frank and honest I think, they shared from their heart how they felt and hence that I am saying it was a good meeting.”
