Trevor Vernon Held at Canadian Border Over Genuine Passport

According to former Ministry of Foreign Affairs official and journalist Trevor Vernon, he was denied entry to Canada on Saturday after border authorities there reportedly declared that his passport was not genuine and that he did not have a Canadian visa. This comes as Belize deals with the Immigration Audit Report which details multiple irregularities with passports, visas and other immigration documents issued to foreign nationals. The audit found that these nationals circumvented the official requirements, in some cases, with the alleged help of members of Immigration staff and even Ministers of Government.  That issue blew up on social media over the weekend. According to Vernon in a post on Facebook, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs asked him to send them the bio-data page and other information from his passport. But Vernon also shared via social media a screenshot of a conversation with Ministry of Foreign Affairs C.E.O. Lawrence Sylvestre. Sylvestre tells him to, “stop causing unnecessary public alarm, end quote, and reminds that his passport is property of the Government of Belize, before asking that he “get home safely.” Vernon responded to a message from News Five via Facebook stating that he will not offer any interviews or make further public statements on his ordeal based on advice from others. C.E.O. Sylvestre when we contacted him directed us to Director of Immigration Diana Locke who was not available at news time.
