Prime Minister Barrow Goes to Bat for Ashley Rocke

Dean Barrow

With mounting pressure for his removal, Senator Rocke issued a statement this afternoon to say that his actions at Wednesday’s Senate sitting, though unpopular, are for the greater good of Belize and that he did not go against the Church, but that he sided with the country. Rocke says that he found more comfort in the counter proposal by Minister Godwin Hulse which to his mind gave room for a more unified approach. Then he adds that he is not sure if there is a difference between the two motions. But there is support in one corner for Rocke. At his press conference this afternoon, the Prime Minister went to bat for the senator.

“Senator Rocke made clear that he was supportive of the Opposition Motion for there to be a hearing with respect to the audit report. He only diverted after he learned that government was proposing hat instead of a narrower Senate Select Committee, we get this done by a bicameral National Assembly Joint Select Committee. What’s to be condemned in terms of Pastor Rocke’s position? I’ve heard the suggestion made well he had already agreed with the Church, whose senator he is, that he would vote for the Opposition motion. So he went against his organization. Well when you are putting that under scrutiny, you must put the position of the Chamber Senator under similar scrutiny you know because I agreed with the Chamber executive yesterday that the matter should be handled, subject to cabinet and the opposition, should be handled by a Joint Select Committee and Lizarraga knew of that position because Godwin Hulse called me. Cabinet knew that I was meeting with the Chamber and Godwin Hulse called me to ask what was agreed and when I told him, he informed Lizarraga, who checked—as I later found out—with the president of the Chamber who confirmed that they had agreed with me that the Joint Select Committee will be better. Did he go against his organization? And the question of who went against who aside, if Rocke is to be condemned because he prefers the Joint Select Committee over the narrower Senate Select Committee, you will similarly condemn the Chamber of Commerce? Because they too obviously prefer the Joint Select Committee over the narrower Senate Select Committee. The proposal sir is for that Joint Select Committee’s membership to reflect what we have agreed in terms of the Public Accounts Committee which is to be reconfigured.”

The problem with Dean Barrow is he thinks he can bullshit his way out of everything. We, the public, are not “learned attorneys”. But you can’t sell that retarded argument to anyone. You are essentially an attorney, arguing to a Jury that the Defence should have a presence on the Judge’s bench. In essence, you get to be both Defendant and Judge. That “Special Machete” you sharpened on both sides to chop off corruption is finally swinging back right at you. Like Said Musa, you will learn that all that money you and your family and friends have stolen will NOT BUY YOU BACK YOUR REPUTATION.
