Opposition to Protest in Belize City Next Wednesday

John Briceño

The P.U.P. touched on a number of other issues. It weighed-in on the massive turnout of protestors who were present for the COLA/Evangelical Church rally in Belmopan on Friday.  According to Party Leader Briceño, the opposition deliberately abstained from bringing out its membership out of respect for the church’s cause.  The events on Friday, however, have prompted the party to mobilize its supporters in the days ahead.

“Now the march was advertised, obviously there was not a mobilization by the People’s United Party to actively be out there. My question is: do you feel that that was a missed opportunity looking back at what took place for you all?”

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“No and I’ll tell you why Geovanni. I think that we fully respected the wishes of the churches that said that they didn’t want it to be political because a lot of our people were ready to be mobilized. But we decided, if you listen to me, we decided that we don’t want for Barrow to say, “Oh dah politics.” We gave the opportunity to the churches, but now we are beyond that. That is why now with the behavior and everything that is happening within these books, it is time for all Belizeans to take to the streets and show their complete displeasure and disappointment with the Barrow administration and telling them that it is enough and it is time for them to get out. And if they think that they still have the support of the Belizean people, I challenge them to call elections now.”
