6 Students Awarded Tourism Scholarships from B.T.B.

Herbert Haylock,

In time for the new academic year, six young Belizeans are preparing to pursue their academic dreams in the field of tourism. Today, the Belize Tourism Board gave them important assistance. Correspondent Aaron Humes reports.

“The intent and the hope is that they do continue forward as future leaders, future movers, future shakers in the industry, and that one day we will see them taking up the position that myself and others hold in the industry at this time.”

Their time is now, and these six recipients of over fifty thousand dollars in scholarship money from the Belize Tourism Board are preparing for a brave new world, even if they may not know what yet lies ahead.

“What do you like most about the tourism industry?”

Akheem O’Brien, Scholarship Recipient

“Mostly, I like the fact that they are doing things for the benefit of the people and for the benefit of the country, and it’s some sort of upliftment for the country. And that the reason why I like it.”

Nissa August, of St. Ann’s village in the Belize District and currently attending the University of Belize, is the winner of the Jean Shaw Tourism Scholarship, dedicated to helping qualified females follow in its namesake’s footsteps.

“Probably five years, of course I will have completed my Bachelor’s degree, furthering my studies out of the country – I’m not sure where yet – or probably start my career. Job, career.”

“But in any particular field or area?”

Nissa August

“Not sure as yet, but particularly within the Ministry or within the accommodation field.”

There was also a scholarship in culinary studies of 10 thousand dollars which was awarded to Einar Marin of St. John’s College Junior College during the Taste of Belize event earlier this year.

Scholarship winners are required to take internships at the Board or other tourism partners during their course of study. The Associate and Bachelor degree scholarships are tuition-only while the Jean Shaw scholarship covers all costs for a four-year course.

Isn’t this the same hypocrite who sued the gob and Btb to stop their ncl projects? Why did he betray his bosses at btia? And how does it feel to go groveling back to the hand that feeds you? Cocoloco must be fuming down south.
