This afternoon, the National Institute of Culture and History presented the winner of the theme competition for the September Celebrations with a cheque for one thousand dollars. Orange Walk teacher Argelia Mendoza Ken explains how she came up with “Sovereign and Strong – Together as One.”

“I was just doing some brainstorming and looking at the different or the current issues affecting our country and trying to see what is the best thing that we want to highlight, and try and see how maybe, we can work towards it.”

Today’s presentation was in lieu of the traditional handover during formal opening ceremonies for the celebrations at St. George’s Caye, which this year have been cancelled due to the ravages of Hurricane Earl. Ken says she will use her winnings to complete some education courses for her diploma at the University of Belize. She currently teaches at Orange Walk’s Belize High School of Agriculture.
