N.T.U.C.B. Has Section 53 Decision as Agenda Item for Upcoming Union Meeting

Religious leaders from across the country, particularly those who are members of the National Evangelical Association of Belize, are planning to descend on Belmopan on Tuesday to protest the controversial Section Fifty-three decision.  The timing of the demonstration is set to coincide with the weekly Cabinet meeting, only there won’t be any this Tuesday since the prime minister is currently out of the country.  While NEAB has been rather vocal about its objection to the ruling, the National Trade Union Congress of Belize is yet to take a stance on the judgment which has since decriminalized same-sex intercourse among consenting adults in private.  As we told you, the umbrella organization often needs to meet general consensus on national issues before putting out a position.  It is not sure how long that process will take, but according to President Marvin Mora, Section Fifty-three is certainly on the agenda for the next meeting of the N.T.U.C.B.

“Has the N.T.U.C.B. formulated a position, a response or a stance on the matter of Section Fifty-Three? Have you guys discussed that since the amendment to the Criminal Code?”

Marvin Mora

Marvin Mora, President, N.T.U.C.B.

“I know that several unions have already started the conversation with their own unions and from there, of course, it will move to the N.T.U.C.B.  It was tabled for discussion at the next general council meeting which will happen next month. We would, however, want to formulate a position before, but I’ve always explained to the media the processing in which the trade union moves is rather slow. But they are slow because we have to get everybody’s input and consensus before we can say oh the congress says this and the congress says that.”

On Tuesday, Attorney General Vanessa Retreage and C.E.O. in the Ministry of Human Development Judith Alpuche will guests on the Open Your Eyes Show to discuss Section Fifty-three.

Why don’t the Churches get it. You have NO INFLUENCE when it comes to the LAWS OF BELIZE. One does not influence another. Churches should embrace on an Education Campaign rather than listening to a couple of radical religious protestors who I bet have skeletons in their closets. Oh, Mr. Mora, does not the NTUCB have other pressing issues to discuss than Section 53?
