Evangelicals Will Seek Support for Appeal

Lance Lewis

Following the prime minister’s press conference, we got a reaction from the National Evangelical Association of Belize on government’s position on Section Fifty-three.  Needless to say, the organization is disappointed that government has chosen to concede defeat.  According to NEAB President, Pastor Lance Lewis, while government has chosen to step aside in the matter, there is little comfort in knowing that the interested parties can proceed with an appeal in the days ahead.

Pastor Lance Lewis, President, NEAB

“I was of the opinion that only the government could appeal.  Now the fact that he has said the church can has sort of dented my feeling towards them.  The fact that the church can now make an appeal is good, it’s just that the cost of doing it by ourselves would be a bit heavy to bear I believe.  But it gives us an opening, although he says that he doesn’t think we can win but we are privileged to do so and I think that’s good, that’s still allowing us an opportunity to make an appeal.  So we have to meet with not just the Evangelical churches but the Catholic, the Anglican and other interested parties to see what the next step forward should be and that’s my whole idea on it.  He has given us the opportunity to appeal so we will sit down with all the various interested church bodies and see the next step in the appeal.”

“Okay sir, now you all sent out a release today exhorting the government, asking the government to please pursue this appeal.  Are you disappointed in the prime minister’s [position]?”

Pastor Lance Lewis

“I am disappointed that he’s not going to make any appeal but he’s telling us that we can make the appeal.”

“Your lawyers have said on record twenty-four hours ago that it is impossible for an interested party to appeal.  They have said it on record.”

Pastor Lance Lewis

“What the prime minister said now is that it is not impossible.”

“Which one do you believe?”

Pastor Lance Lewis

“He’s a lawyer too, they are lawyers.  It’s a funny question.”
