Department of Human Services to Take Custody of Sodomy Victim

Judith Alpuche

As we reported on Tuesday, an eleven-year-old boy from Santa Elena Town, Cayo District was allegedly sodomized by his sixteen-year-old brother as he slept in his room early Friday morning.  C.E.O. in the Ministry of Human Development, Judith Alpuche, told us previously that the ministry is working closely with police to ensure the child’s safety and protection. When we caught up with her today she reported that he will soon be in the care of the state. Alpuche explains why.

Judith Alpuche, C.E.O., Ministry of Human Development

“Today we went in for a care order for that child; he finished up his statements, official statements to the police, and we’ve gone in for a care order – talking to the family about how we can really ensure protection for this child, and bringing in – actually we found that we have to bring this child into state care, to ensure that he is fully protected.”

“Okay. Does that hurt the family in any way, that the state now has to take care of your child because of something his sibling did, that nobody expected?”

Judith Alpuche
“It’s always a very difficult situation for families, and so we really have to look at it from the place of the child, that is our role, to look at what is in the best interests of the child. And it is from that place that decisions are made.”
