Belizeans to Get Help from NEMO, Not U.D.P. Area Rep

Dean Barrow

So with all that said, the government will step in, right? Belizeans remember in late 2015 when a tropical depression flooded the south side and brought U.D.P. politicians with relief galore, including new appliances and money. We’re talking millions in disaster relief. But there’s a difference now. For one, there’s no major election in a few weeks, and two – there’s no money left. The Prime Minister explained why this time around, Belizeans needing help will have to find the elusive Mr. NEMO rather than their nearest U.D.P. rep.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“We don’t have the abundance of financial resources that we had at the time of that disaster when Petrocaribe was still in full swing, so in that context insisting that everything goes through the professionals is a way of protecting the Area Representatives because if we tried to have them handle the disbursements themselves I fear what would happen when they are not able to satisfy people in the manner that people will demand, so that’s basically what’s driving the decision to leave the allocation of the resources entirely to NEMO. As I said Area Reps will be expected to help because human resources are scarce at NEMO, so to the extent that you want to cue people up and have their submissions ready to go so that NEMO can evaluate rather than in every case having to do from the ground up – we do encourage Area Reps to get involved in that way, but it’s going to be limited to that. The Area Representatives I am suggesting will be proactive to use that horrible word, but in a way you answer your own question. That’s how people have been cultured so they will find their Area Representatives in any event. In addition, though, NEMO as Colonel Defour has said will try to get out the blocks fast and begin almost a sort of parallel exercise by way of its own assessment process.”
