NEMO’s State of Preparedness
Earlier today, our News Five team spoke to NEMO Coordinator Clare Moody at NEMO’s Headquarters in Belmopan. Although the storm has shifted its trajectory north, NEMO continues in a state of preparedness. Moody outlines what has been put in place to weather Hurricane Earl.
“We prepare from season to season. So when November and the season is over, it begins a new year of preparation for us and we continue on to prepare up until the beginning of the new season, which commences on the first of June. When the first of June comes in, we are already prepared with most everything that we need to be in place in times like these or if there are any other disasters. Some of the challenges is to let people understand to move away, evacuate and get themselves to safety before a weather strikes. By means of preparation, we move together as a team and our workers are properly prepared. We were prepared with our shelters that have been well organized and well managed. We were prepared with whatever training…because that is one of the essential things…to educate people on the different things that they need to do in times like these. Like I said the challenge was to get people to understand what it means to evacuate from their homes in times that you may not put other people’s lives in danger.”
