Mayor Bradley Refutes Claims of Missing Money at City Hall

Darrell Bradley

Today, as Mayor Darrell Bradley denied knowing accused murderer William Mason, he also deflected rumors of two hundred thousand milling out of the municipal bond sinking fund. It’s a report that has been going around for a few weeks now, and reliable sources tell us that it was a matter of book-keeping as opposed to larceny. Mayor Bradley washed his hands of that one, claiming that the Council has no control over the subvention money which is what goes directly into the sinking fund.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

“No funds from the City Council is mingled with any sinking fund funds. Those funds go directly from our subvention and our head tax and are paid into the Central Bank. None of our accountants here account for any of those funds. The mayor doesn’t…I don’t have control over those funds. Those funds are paid directly from the Ministry of Finance into the Central Bank. They are held in an account; we get regular reports in relation to the generating of income because we have diversified our portfolio so we buy treasury notes and there are minor investments in relation to that and on the savings I think we have a slight interest that we gather from that. But the article seem to suggest that there is some leak or something here at City Hall, but we don’t control those funds at all so that cannot have any merit.”

“So we’d have to ask Central Bank about that or…?”

Darrell Bradley

“Well I don’t know why would you. It makes no sense. That story actually has no merit whatsoever. And for it to have any merit, it would mean that we are not collecting our subvention, it is not going into the sinking fund, it is not being populated or so forth in the proper way. And those funds in any event are audited by independent auditors and the reports are produced and I do believe we make those reports public. I myself don’t upload them, but we do do that.”
