Football, Basketball and Softball in Weekend Sports

Good evening, I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

We begin with Belize District Football t the MCC Grounds where the mad dash to make the championship match raged as Lake I Bombers and Sports Academy almost fought to a standstill. 8 minutes in, Francesco Briceño guides this set piece into the danger zone; Keron Miguel in goal for Lake I swabs it out to Dejean Thompson who gives Stars Academy the 1-zip lead. Folks, 7 minutes later, Randy Franklin tries to clear this center out of danger; the ball finds his left hand and after a brief soul searching, the referee rules penalty. Lloyd Jones gets the call and he really displaces goalkeeper Elden Linarez with the left foot to forge the 1-1 tie. In 2nd half play, Shemar Thompson gets 2 chances to give Stars Academy the lead. He botches the 1st and is then denied by Keron Miguel who really didn’t know too much about it.

Late into 2nd half, Lake I Bombers get to steal the lead but Kadeem Myers looks the gift horse in the mouth. So we’re into overtime and it’s Stars Academy who strike first and it’s a beauty when Shemar Thompson lays these 2 defensive players to waste to tap a left foot push into the near corner. The celebration is well rehearsed, but premature because 8 minutes later, Delroy Flores comes up with this magnificent header to force the 2-2 overtime tie. Here’s the win in a nutshell; Gilbert Gomez breaks the 4-4 with this conversion to give Lake I Bombers a 5-4 lead. Jonathan Perera steps up in a must score sudden death situation—his penalty kick is rejected by Keron Miguel. Lake I Bombers advance to the finals with a 5-4 victory on penalty kicks.

Lake I Bombers will now face Eiley FC who dispersed FC Elite in a 3-2 finish. This Sunday at the MCC Grounds it’s money time with the BDBA title on the line. Game time is 1 p.m. for the 3rd place battle between Stars Academy and Elite FC and the championship match up is set for 3 p.m.

In basketball news, we caught up with Friday night’s Firms Competition showdown between Belize City Council Dragons and Infotel. Andrew Vasquez gets the City Council going early, landing this triple and he would lead his team tonight with 21 pts. Of course Infotel has Earl Johnson who always comes out the play and here he gives his team the lead with this bucket. Johnson would put 14 pts and pull 9 boards. At the end of the 1st, Infotel leads 17 to 16. In the 2nd quarter, Infotel extends the lead. Mister Elvis Olivera receives the long pass and flashes to the hoops. No doubt Olivera is the best player tonight, posting game highs of 38 pts and 12 rebounds plus received the highest efficiency rating of 47. Mister Olivera displays his guile and power down low to earn 3 pts the old fashioned way leading his team with more than half of their total score. At the half, Infotel has tames the Dragons with a 42 to 31 showing.

In the 3rd, the sleeping Dragons awaken. Andrew Vasquez finds Benedict Terry down low and he goes glass for 2 of his 10 game points. Sidney Bradley wants 3, Sidney Bradley gets 3…would go 3 for 3 from beyond the arc and would finish with 15 pts. Andrew Vasquez contributes to the separation by busting through the Infotel defense. Gabriel Taylor then sticks this put back for 2 of his 12 pts. Going into the 4th quarter the Belize City Council Dragons have cut the deficit to 3. We’re tied at 69 apiece when Sidney Bradley sinks his 3rd 3 point shot and the Dragons have a 2 pt lead. The Dragons would go on to carve out the big win from the charity stripe in an 80 to 74 final score.

In other results from around Central Health really did a number on Bowen and Bowen in a 109 to 57 blow out; BWSL stopped Heritage Bank big time 90 to 67 and B.T.L. downed Drones 91 to 68.

Finally folks, Interoffice Softball is kicking and alive at Roger’s Stadium. On Sunday, B.T.L. Softball team took on B.E.L. Power Sockets. We’re in the top of the 3rd. B.T.L. with a 2-1 lead have the bases loaded for Bernard Pitts, facing Jashema Saunders and Pitts hits it to deep left field. Shanti Roches and Mark Anderson score wile Dilton Leal reaches third base. Trenton Marin comes up to bring home Leal with this single up the middle. With Marconi Leal at 3rd base, Tamara Ramsey gets a single to bring him home, thereby capping a 4-run inning to take a 6-3 lead. We head to the bottom with B.E.L. on offense trailing in a 6-3 score, facing Lorena Martinez. The bases are loaded for Glenford Flowers and the lefty swings for an in the park home run; James Paxton, Jashema Saunders, Tanya Gomez and Mister Flowers score. Kareon Michaels comes up with Gadsden Ferguson at 2nd and brings him home with this swing. James comes in facing the new pitcher, Bernard Pitts and sacrifices to bring in Joseph Enriquez for the 6th run of the inning. B.E.L. would score 7 runs in the bottom of the 4th and would bat in 4 more runs in the 5th to post the 14-7 victory over B.T.L.
