George Gough Liable for Medical Negligence

Dr. George Gough

Chairman of the Belize Medical Council and Laparoscopic Surgeon George Gough has been found liable for negligence in a medical malpractice lawsuit brought against him in 2013 for a gallbladder surgery he allegedly botched in 2009. The claimant, Alice Arana Gillett, alleged that she almost died of complications caused after a routine surgery performed by Gough, when he accidentally lacerated her bile duct. In addition, the Court found that Gough never informed her of what had happened, even when she had to have a second, corrective surgery. Arana-Gillett eventually had to get follow up care in the US to repair the damage done by Gough. In testimony she told the Court that doctors in the U.S. claim that it is a miracle that she is still alive. The extended judgment was handed down by Justice Courtney Abel on Wednesday and we’ve only just gotten hold of it, but the gist of it is that Gough will have to pay Arana-Gillett general damages of more than twenty-one thousand, and special damages of more than thirty-one thousand dollars. As we mentioned, Gough is the Chairman of the Belize Medical Council.

Ah yes, doctors. They bury their mistakes.

  2. Kay says:

How many of these types of incidences have happened but because Belizeans have way too much faith in our caliber of doctors that they just bury their loved ones and don’t think anything of possible Medical Malpractice?
