Organized Crime Funding Guatemalan Communities Rape of Chiquibul

Byron Castellanos

According to Castellanos the illegal incursions are caused by poverty, but that poverty is used to great effect by organized crime cartels which reap the lucrative dividends of the illegal labor.

Byron Castellanos, Executive Director, BALAM

“The greatest threats are those that you can see listed there – the extraction of flora and fauna, agricultural expansion, illegal activities and drug trafficking. All these activities together are caused by organized crime in the area. Those who finance the communities are the same that finance the activities you see on the slide. Organized crime pays for gold, for flora and fauna, for agricultural production and for drugs. Therefore this poses a problem of security for both countries, Belize and Guatemala.”

Totally agree. But it is what it is and at the rate GOB is handling the situation, that border will never be secure. My idea is to lease a 5 km strip of land right along the border to the Brits or US military and let them play their war games up and down it. GOB gets the rent, people get jobs, bars in Cayo would fill (like in the old days), and we get a secure border courtesy of the troops. Why won’t that work??
