Coast Guard and Mexican Navy Discuss Maritime Agreement

George Lovell

A delegation of high ranking Mexican naval officers met with the brass of the Belize National Coast Guard this morning to discuss the framework of a bilateral agreement between the two maritime forces.  The accord will also allow for an exchange of officers to train in both countries.  According to C.E.O. George Lovell, the case involving Petty Officer Kevin Diego is the perfect example of the mutual partnership at work.

Ret. Col. George Lovell, C.E.O., Ministry of National Security

“We have, under the bilateral arrangement with Mexico and Belize, an arrangement for cooperation in matters like these and this is a true testament of the partnership that we have with the Mexicans.  It has come to fruition, it has shown where we really need that we have a partner on the other side.  We have been having these kinds of bilateral meetings not just with the navy but with the B.D.F., the Forensics and with some other elements of government, including customs and immigration.  We normally refer to it as GANSEF.  GANSEF has been going on now I think since 2005 and it is an initiative where we have been collaborating with our neighbors in the north and it has brought fruit to us and so we are delighted to see that in this particular occasion with Petty Officer Diego that he was able to get the kind of treatments that will hopefully bring him back to normal way of operating in a very short time.”

The meeting this afternoon was held at the coastguard headquarters near the outskirts of Belize City.
