Regional Postal Service Professionals Attend Training Workshop in Belize

Wayne Smith

Since Monday, postal service professionals from across the Caribbean have been engaged in a training program by the Universal Postal Union. Post Master Generals and their deputies convened at the Biltmore Plaza today for day two of the week-long training on two topics—quality of service fund and postal reform. Participants will be updated on the new rules and regulations governing the fund, and the procedures to access monies for projects.

Wayne Smith, Secretary General, Universal Postal Union

“Most of the posts are microcosms of the wider world. So the problems that you find in the world, you find in the posts. And where you find challenges in one posts, the challenges are likely to be similar in another post. So we are all struggling with the same things, which is declining mail volumes, pressure from private sector couriers; the focus of the business is shifting from traditional letter mail to express mail and parcels, small parcels and online shopping. So the posts are in a period of transition to putting themselves in positions to capitalize on this gravy train which is online shopping.”

“One of the things that resonated within the discussions is in the area of delivery. What the quality of service fund will do is that the post offices will be in the position to submit process to that fund as a means to improve their infrastructure—be it for purchasing bicycles, of motor vehicles, of security equipment that would foster the delivery of mail within the Caribbean. In terms of other challenges that we are facing, when we look at the opportunities that the internet provides, there is a vast amount of resources out there that the post office can tap into so that we can start offering some of the services that the customers today are requesting. Consider yourself ordering a package via the internet from wherever and the ability for you to make that purchase and for you to get it at your doorsteps within a couple of days. These are some of the services that customers are requesting and so these are some of the things that we will be looking at to venture into.”
