A Coordinated Effort to Stem the Recent Crime Wave in the Old Capital

Linden Flowers

It’s been a while since there was a murder on the north side of Belize City. But in that vicinity of Barrack Road and Castle Street, we’ve reported several shootings happening in that specific area, particularly when it comes to gang-related gun violence. Today, the media asked the senior officers of Eastern Division North about the unease of spiking crime in that area.

Sr. Supt. Linden Flowers, Acting Regional Commander, Eastern Division North

“We have in that area mandatory foot patrol that is done out of precinct three; we have bicycle patrols and that is one of the sector of precinct three that our strike team focus in and we put in regular community policing efforts in that area; meet and greet and other instances to address the issues there.”

“There were three murders in one day and an arson in the same day. Do you feel that there are maybe signs that things could get worse or there could be some kind of urgency in the city?”

“Well like I explained earlier, we cannot answer for south side, but on the north side, we had a murder and we had an arson and we have beefed up our patrols. Like Mister Flowers rightfully mentioned, we do not see any reason to scare the public, the law abiding citizens and put them into any state of panic because we have a murder on this side which you rightfully mentioned Duane, we haven’t seen a murder for a while. It does raise our eyebrows and like Mister Romero also said, we are trying to see the connection with that murder and the other one that it’s alleged is connected. And we have our mechanism in place to keep this kind of crime from reoccurring and we just want to let our general citizens know that we will not stop our efforts to try to solve these crimes and prevent these crimes. We need their help, because we cannot do it alone.”
