Carlos Duarte Dies in Weekend Accident at Nuts Curve

There was a second fatal road traffic accident under the jurisdiction of the Intermediate Southern Formation of the Police Department. It occurred on Saturday morning and also involved a passenger bus and a Chrysler van. About five-forty a.m., police were called out to an area known as Nuts Curve on the Southern Highway. There they found the lifeless body of Carlos Duarte of Bella Vista Village. Duarte, who was driving the van at high speed, collided head on into the C and D bus, driven at the time by twenty-nine year old Oscar Lopez. According to Inspector Sherlet Ramclam, investigation later revealed that Duarte had stolen the vehicle from his employer.

“Carlos Duarte of Bella Vista village was driving a minivan, blue in color, heading towards independence and upon approaching the curve; he crashed into a passenger bus owned by D&C Bus Service which does run from Bella Vista to Placencia. At the time, he was coming in speed on the wrong hand, wrong side of the road, right into the driver.  There is no way on a curve that a river could avoid an accident like that. We later found out that Mister Duarte had stolen the van from Mister Coh; he is the owner of the van. And he caused the accident on the road; it was no fault of the [bus] driver. The scene showed that he was coming in a speed because if you see the van right now, you would see that it is completely damaged to the front. And so we had to get the fire department to come and cut him out of the van because it was impossible. It took about two or three hours out there, trying to take him out of the van, he died on the spot out there. His body was transported to Dangriga and then to Belmopan to do the post mortem.”
