Police Department Awards Outstanding Belize City Cops

Chester Williams

The outstanding men and women of the Belize Police Department from various precincts across Belize City were awarded today for exceptional work in community policing and other aspects of law enforcement.  It is the second of a quarterly ceremony acknowledging the stellar efforts of these officers.  This afternoon, ACP Chester Williams and Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley were on hand to salute the awardees.

ACP Chester Williams, Commander, Eastern Division South

“The awards from the precinct level; the nominees were nominated by the Precinct Commander and the executive duty officer at the different precincts. Hey normally nominate three persons from each relief and we have a selection process. The selection process is done democratically where it is by vote. All the senior managers get together; they have to do a write up on the nominee as well, we go through the write up and everything and based on that then the senior managers’ vote and the person who garners the most votes is the one who gets the award. In respect to the most outstanding police officer award, which PC Lawrence got, that is an award that I gave. That award is basically for a police officer who was once irregular—meaning absent from duties and these sort of things—and we have seen where he has now developed to the stage where he takes his job seriously, he comes to work early, he is always tidy and everything. And for that Mister Lawrence is awarded the most outstanding police officer of the quarter. We have the outstanding civilian award, again, that is done by me. I looked at all the civilian employees and based on that, I decide on their performance, which of them will be given the award of most outstanding civilian award. In respect of the outstanding MCO…that is done through the democratic process where we select from a batch of MCOs; those who we believe are deserving of the award. And again, we had a voting process and there was a tie between Mister Novelo and Mister Carlos. So for that, both of them were awarded best MCO awards.”

“Our role I think as I mentioned in the presentation is really to support the excellent work that the Belize Police Department is doing. I’ve seen tremendous on the ground kind of operations and I think the police has really increased tremendously in the area of enforcement, increased checkpoints, policing aspects and so forth—the arrest rates—so I think we are on the ball in relation to increased policing activities which I would consider traditional policing activities. One of the things which I really wanted to laud and celebrate the police for is that I think the leadership has a certain heart. I see them really take on board this idea of community policing so that you see police officers walking on the street, introducing themselves to members of the community. I’ve participated in activities where police are playing dominoes with people in gang-toned areas; you have the BLACK March and activities. Recently the police opened a park on West Street and I think that this really is showing that our police are on the right foot. I think a combination of strong enforcement and good community relations is really a recipe for success in the crime prevention business.”
